One thing to note if you are coming from Belize into Guatemala is that it is better to change money with the Guatemalticans than the Belizeans as they offer a better rate (we changed left-over Mexican Pesos). The first time you will meet them if you are driving your own vehicle is when you reach the area where they spray the vehicle, so you can get your Quetzales there to pay all fees.
2007: there's a new road and border crossing (with full customs facilities) just south of the Caribbean, connecting PUERTO BARRIOS [Guatemala] with SAN PEDRO SULA [Honduras] - on most maps this road is not showing, yet it's a convenient route if you want to visit Honduras' caribbean coast and islands! [We haven't driven it.]
I have decided to include the most important info about Guatemala in our Useful LINKS & TIPS section which has been re-organized.
If you're driving yourself check out our camping directory for Guatemala!
